Get started in 3 steps
Download VM64 from the App Store
Open the App Store on your Mac, then search for VM64 and install it.
Create a new virtual machine
Open VM64, create a new virtual machine, and select the system you want to install.
Install a guest operating system
Choose the installer image for the system, then start the virtual machine. Follow the onscreen instructions to install the system, and then it's ready to use.
System requirements
Before you download, make sure your Mac meets these requirements.
See system requirements by feature- Run VM64
- macOS 12 or later. Works on both Apple silicon and Intel-based Mac computers.
- macOS virtual machines
- Apple silicon, macOS 12 or later. Intel-based Mac computers can't run macOS virtual machines.
- Run x86_64 programs in a Linux virtual machine with Rosetta
- Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later. The Linux virtual machine must use the Apple backend.
- Other features
- Includes DirectX graphics, clipboard and folder sharing in macOS virtual machines, and automatic display resolution in macOS virtual machines. Depending on the feature, the minimum is macOS 13, 14, or 15.
Apple silicon and Intel-based Mac computers
Both kinds of Mac can run VM64. When a virtual machine has the same architecture as your Mac, VM64 uses virtualization for near-native speed.
Mac with Apple silicon
On a Mac with Apple silicon, ARM64 systems run with virtualization. They run at near-native speed. Systems for x86 and other architectures run through QEMU emulation, which is slower. If your Mac has Apple silicon and runs macOS 12 or later, you can install macOS virtual machines.
Intel-based Mac
On an Intel-based Mac, x86_64 systems run with virtualization. They run at near-native speed. Systems for ARM64 and other architectures run through QEMU emulation, which is slower. Intel-based Mac computers can't run macOS virtual machines.
